We at Plateauland feel that education is the key to achieving our mission.
- Nationally, between 5-6 million cats and dogs are turned in at shelters each year. Half of these abandoned animals are euthanized.
- Locally, approximately 5,000 animals are turned in at the shelter and 48% are euthanized
- 70% of cats and dogs abandoned at shelters are turned in by owners
- Pet owners often do not recognize the importance of spaying and neutering. They believe that one litter of puppies or kittens won’t make a difference.
- One female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce 420,000 kittens
- One female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 puppies
We at PMVC feel that education is the key to achieving our mission. We have developed an education program that provides local communities with the information necessary to better care for their pets. We have also developed an interactive program that involves both local and Reservation schools. Our Education Director visits schools and talks with children on how to properly care for their pets in addition to the benefits of spaying and neutering. We hope that by getting this message across to the children they will in turn pass it on to their parents. Additionally, the next generation will have the information enabling them to be well informed, responsible pet owners as adults. Here are some of the facts we hope to continue to educate the public on about spaying/neutering and taking appropriate care of your pets.
Spaying your female dog or cat will:
- Eliminate the need to confine your animal during every heat cycle
- Prevent the nuisance of unwanted suitors prowling your home
- Significantly reduce the risk of mammary, ovarian and uterine cancers
- Prevent dangerous reproductive infections such as pyometra
- In dogs, prevent the transmission or contraction of diseases such as Transmissible Canine Venereal Tumor
- Most importantly – eliminate unwanted litters!
Neutering your male dog or cat will:
- Keep him from wandering away from home
- Eliminate male cats from spraying pungent smelling urine to mark their territories
- Prevent aggressive behavior
- Significantly reduce the risk of prostate or testicular cancer
- In dogs, prevent the transmission or contraction of diseases such as Transmissible Canine Venereal Tumor
- Eliminate unwanted litters!
